What is a chisel
Chisel Definition
The wood chisel is an essential constituent of your toolset. A wood chisel is a tool with a characteristically shaped cutting edge of a blade on its end. A chisel is used for cutting or carving wood, by hand, struck with a mallet, or mechanical power.
The handle and blade of some types of chisel are made of metal or of wood with a sharp edge in it. There are different types of chisels.
The woodworking chisel is generally used forcing the blade into some material to cut it. The driving force may be applied by pushing by hand, or by using a mallet.
A sharp wood chisel can cut mortises, shave rough surfaces, chop out corners and scrape off the glue.
There are many sizes, that’s why they are sold also in sets. Typically, in woodcarving, tasks begin with a larger chisel to remove big sections of wood and gradually advances to finish the detail with smaller ones.
Types of wood chisels you can buy
As there are several types of chisels and several sizes in the woodworking store or on a site that present woodworking tools online like this. Then here there is a list of several types of chisels.
Gouge

Slick

Firmer chisel
It has a blade with a thick rectangular cross-section, making them stronger for use on tougher and heavier work.
Bevel edge chisel
generally used for horizontal or vertical paring to a line where exact control is required. They can get into acute angles with its beveled edges.
Heavy Mortise chisel
thick, rigid blade with straight cutting edge and deep, slightly tapered sides to make mortises and similar woodworking joints.
struck with a mallet are especially good for the fast waste removal required for mortises.
Paring chisel
has a long blade ideal for cleaning grooves and accessing tight spaces.
Skew chisel
has a 60-degree cutting angle and is used for trimming and finishing across the grain.
Dovetail chisel
made specifically for cutting dovetail joints. The distinction is the thickness of the body of the chisel, as well as the angle of the edges, allowing easier access to the joint.
Butt chisel
short chisel with beveled sides and straight edge for creating joints.
Wood Carving chisels
used for complex designs and sculpting; cutting edges are many; such as a gouge, skew, parting, straight, paring, and V-groove.
Corner chisel
resembles a punch and has an L-shaped cutting edge. Cleans out square holes, mortises, and corners with 90-degree angles.
Flooring chisel
cuts and lifts flooring materials for removal and repair; ideal for tongue-and-groove flooring.
Framing chisel
usually used with a mallet; similar to a butt chisel, except it has a long, slightly flexible blade.
Lathe tool
It is a woodworking chisel designed to cut wood as it is spun on a lathe.
